Common faults

Problems we fix most often

Find the one that sounds like yours. Each shows what the technician looks at first.

01

Electric oven not heating at all

We check the power supply, the timer or clock setting (on many ovens a clock that isn't set stops the oven from working), the thermostat and the elements. A completely dead oven with a working clock often points to the thermal cut-out, a safety fuse that trips if the oven overheats.

02

Top works, bottom doesn't (or the other way round)

One of the elements has failed. On the bottom element you can sometimes see a break or blister. Elements are a common, reasonably quick replacement.

03

Fan oven heats poorly or unevenly

Fan ovens have a circular element around the fan at the back. If the fan runs but there's no heat, the element has usually gone. If you hear grinding or the fan doesn't turn, it's the fan motor.

04

Temperature is wrong

Food burning at a normal setting, or taking twice as long, points to the thermostat or temperature sensor. We test it against a thermometer.

05

Gas oven won't light, or goes out

Similar to the hob: the igniter, the flame-failure device or the oven thermostat valve. Gas ovens should always be checked by a technician rather than taken apart at home.

06

Light, door or seal problems

A broken door hinge, cracked inner glass or worn seal lets heat escape and cooks unevenly. Hinges, seals and bulbs are all replaceable.

Trips the electricity when switched on

Usually a shorted element or moisture in the wiring. Don't keep resetting the breaker. Leave it off and call us.

On the visit

What the technician does

No visit or inspection fee. Nothing is replaced until you've heard the price and agreed to it.

  1. Checks the settings and clock first, so you don't pay for a fault that isn't there.
  2. Tests the elements, fan, thermostat and wiring, or the gas parts on a gas oven.
  3. Gives you the fault and full price.
  4. Repairs it once you agree.
  5. Heats the oven up and checks the temperature before leaving.
Care tips

Keeping an oven working well

Clean spills on the oven floor before they bake on

Heavy carbon on the bottom can affect the element and the heat.

Don't cover the floor or rack fully with foil

It blocks heat and airflow.

Be gentle with the door

Leaning on an open door or slamming it is how hinges and glass break.

Use the right setting

Fan, top-and-bottom and grill settings cook very differently, so check the symbols in the manual.

Questions

Oven questions

Something else? Call or send a WhatsApp and ask.

My oven clock is flashing and the oven won't heat. Is it broken?

Often not. After a power cut, many ovens need the clock set, or the manual mode selected, before they'll work. Try that first.

Can you repair built-in ovens without removing the kitchen cabinets?

Most repairs are done by sliding the oven out of its housing. We don't need to remove cabinets for typical faults.

Is it worth repairing an old oven?

Elements, fans, thermostats, hinges and seals are generally worth repairing. We'll tell you if the cost doesn't make sense.
